Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services are a collection of remote computing services offered over the internet. They offer a scalable, flexible, secure, and dependable alternative to in-house or outsourced data centers. These services include:
- Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2™)
A web service that provides virtual machines, i.e. server instances, on which the customer can load any software of their choice. A customer can create, launch, and terminate server instances as needed, paying by the hour for active servers. - Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3™)
A web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve data from anywhere on the web. - Amazon CloudFront™
A web service for content delivery. - Amazon SimpleDB™
A web service for running queries on structured data in real time. This service works in close conjunction with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). - Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS™)
A hosted queue for storing messages as they travel between computers.
The Amazon Web Services pricing model is based on true utility computing with customers only paying for what they use. In the case of EC2™, pricing is per instance-hour consumed for each instance type, from the time an instance is launched until it is terminated.
